Special Delivery

Whether it’s your first or your fifth, birth is one of life’s most momentous events, long-remembered and often recounted.

“It’s a very special day for new parents,” says Patti Valentini, Beaufort Memorial Hospital’s obstetrics department director. “They want a warm, welcoming environment to spend those first few hours with their baby."

The Beaufort Memorial Birthing Center supports Lowcountry parents with a pleasant, comfortable setting to welcome the newest additions to their families. The Birthing Center is home to the county’s only Level II nursery and a team of skilled, board-certified OB/GYN specialists.

Our Birthing Center is a comforting environment for those first precious moments with your newborn.

Beaufort Memorial goes above and beyond to provide a safe and fulfilling birth experience. Special details like designated up-front parking spaces for expectant moms, and a cozy comfortable décor, and snack baskets in each postpartum room make the Birthing Center feel more like a home than a hospital. “We’re getting away from the institutional look of a hospital,” Patti says. “When the patient walks into their room, it will feel like they’re in a hotel.”

Patient education, which includes everything from bathing the baby to umbilical cord care is customized to suit the specific needs of each family. “A 23-year-old first-time mother may need more help than a 40-year-old woman having her sixth baby,” Patti explains. “We individualize education, rather than just give a standard set of instructions.”

The same nurses stay with each family from admission to recovery, with labor and delivery nurses visiting patients in their rooms in the hospital.  “During the labor and delivery process, nurses and patients develop a bond,” Patti says. “It’s comforting to have the same nurse caring for you.”
