First Friday After Five

Head downtown from 5 – 8 p.m. and enjoy the sunset over the beautiful Beaufort waterfront. Enjoy a few extra hours of shopping, meet friends for libations, listen to live local music or savor a late dinner. Details.

Downtown Beaufort Farmers Market

Visit the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park Pavilion from 2 – 6 p.m. to visit local farmers and growers while enjoying live entertainment and prepared foods made using local ingredients. Details.

Come on in, the Water’s Fine

Grab your goggles and dive into the Wardle Family YMCA’s 10th Annual Beaufort River Swim. Beginning at 8 a.m., competitive swimmers, triathletes and recreational and fitness swimmers will test themselves in a three-mile open water swim from the Port Royal Landing Marina to the boat ramp at the corner of the Downtown Beaufort Marina.

Beginners can test the waters in a one-mile “Fun Swim.” Details.

Annual Sand Sculpture Contest

Friends of Hunting Island’s annual contest takes place on the North Beach. Individuals and teams can gather for the popular competition. The competition runs from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. with prizes awarded in the afternoon. Details. 

Saturday, June 18, to Thursday, June 26

74th Hampton County Watermelon Festival

This nine-day event includes contests, music, parades, rides, a mud run, pageants and a pet show. A highlight will be the Palmetto Blue concert on Wednesday, June 25, from 6 – 8 p.m. at Open Arms Fellowship Church on Highway 601 North in Hampton. Admission is free. Festival details.

Sweetgrass Basket-Making Classes

On Saturdays at the Coastal Discovery Museum, you can learn all about Sweetgrass baskets from a local Gullah basket maker beginning at 10:30 a.m. Then, try your hand at starting a basket of your own. Reservations are required. Details.

Free Movie Night in the Park at Shelter Cove Towne Centre

After the sun sets over Broad Creek, Shelter Cove Community Park will present a movie under the stars on Thursday evenings throughout the summer. On June 30, enjoy “Disneynature’s Earth” on a 20-foot screen. Bring a blanket or a beach chair and enjoy take-out dining from community merchants. The movie starts at 9 p.m. Details.
